THE RAINBOW NATION SOUTH AFRICA

The different races in the rainbow nation

SHOULD SOUTH AFRICA STILL BE CALLED THE RAINBOW NATION?

South Africa is called the"rainbow nation" , This term was coined by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe South Africa after the the first democratic election in 1994.This was a way of uniting the nation as one, all the different races of people, tribes and colours that lived there.

There is a lot of blood  found at the end of their rainbow....

Racial intergration is still a problem in South Africa. Black and white people are still at war , some white people refuse to be apart of the rainbow nationThus spreading racial hatred and evoking anger amongts the nation

How social media plays a role in the problem?

Social media plays a significant role in this problem as it allows individuals to express their opinions on certain issues. As social media users it is in peoples nature to take to different platforms to voice their opinions and share their experiences on certain issues.

How can social media help combat this problem?

Social media can help solve this problem by raising awareness of this issue, it can share insight into how some individuals still think in the modern day and age. It can help to get the word out there and by people seeing this it can change their mindset for the better. Also, it can assist the nation in uniting and dealing with individuals who still have this type of mindset through the proper channels.

The use of hashtags on social media

It makes it easier for people to find, follow and contribute to a conversation on social media. #NoToASegregatedSA can assist in raising awareness about this issue as it is still a problem in South Africa. It can allow individuals to share their stories and insights as well as their own personal experiences on this topic but most importantly it can unite the nation as they can join forces and stand up against it, join forces by creating a social media page to speak about it and organise events such as marches to protest against it.

The advantages and disadvantages of social media for public relations professionals

ADVANTAGES:

  • It allows public relations practitioners to reach more consumers and more people.
  • It also plays a role in reaching a wider net to getting a message out there thus creating a buzz  and raising awareness about a particular campaign that the PRP is working on such as  #NoToSegregationSA resulting in one successfully being able to promote the hashtag.
  • It enables PRPs to raise funds for a certain campaign or movement, when people hear about it, they want to get in on it and help make a difference.
  • It establishes two -way communication with customers, thus resulting in the building of relationships and brand/organisation loyalty and it also allows customers and followers to interact with the human face of the brand.

DISADVANTAGES:

  • One cannot control individual's opinions.
  • Followers/ publics might misinterpret the PRPs message.
  • If people do not agree with what is being said by the PRP they will voice it thus leaving space for negative feedback.
  • Once information is posted or published it gets shared easily and if there is something wrong with the post it can be taken down however it would still have been shared and reached several audiences.

RECOMMENDATIONS

- It is recommended that we unite as a nation , all races, cultures, genders, ages and religions to fight against this and restore the spirit of ubuntu in our country.
-In order to tolerate this issue until we can eventually get rid of it for good we should start by teaching the new generation the correct way and to love one another and embrace and celebrate their differences.
- It is recommended that the South African national anthem be taught in schools and that people live by it and sing it with pride.

  2. In my point of view South Africa is not a rainbow nation, that concept might have been introduced but we are not putting it into practice. just look at how foreigners are treated there is no humanity nor unity at all, we treat one another like dogs all that should end in SA let us show that we really are a rainbow nation.

    1. Thank you for your insights... South Africa has been through a lot prior to 1994 however there is still a lot of work that needs to be done and a good foundation to a true rainbow nation is the younger generation by teaching them good values whilst they are still young to enjoy the fruits of a rainbow nation in the mere future.

  6. Irrespective of our colour skin every one has the right to life. Xenophobia really tarnishes the "rainbow nation" for South Africa because of killing our fellow Africans. We as young South Africans should just forget about the past and look forward to the future without any hatred towards one another.

    1. Thank you for your comment... But how can the past be forgotten if it is being taught in schools today? But I couldn't agree with you more that its time for reconciliation

  7. Even thou our country is not the same "Rainbow Nation" it used to be, I believe we as young individuals can make some sort of difference for our future generations and children. We need to learn to look past each other's differences and treat each other differently.

The change starts with you and me.

No matter what the colour of your skin is, we are all South Africans at the end of the day!
